Octavo, string-bound 9 pp. Navy Department, August 19, 1852: Sir: In compliance with the resolution of the Senate of the 17th instant, I have the honor to transmit, herewith, the statements therin required, as to the clerks in this department and its bureaus, and to state that no additional compensation is allowed to any one except the superintendent of the southwest executive building, which is done under a provision of the law. No person is employed as an extra clerk, or employed in copying of the department of either of its bureaus. I have the honor to be, very respectfully, your servant, John P. Kennedy. Hon. William R. King, President of the United States Senate. Statement giving the names, and compensation per annum, of each of the clerks employed in the office of the Secretary of the Navy, and also a description of the services performed by such clerks, respectively, including any additional compensation allowed to either for any purpose. John Etheridge, chief clerk -- compensation $2,000 per annum -- has the general direction and supervision of the clerical duties of the department proper; and "in case of a vacancy in the office of the Secretary by removal or otherwise, it shall be the duty of the principal clerk to take the charge and custody of all the books, records, and documents of the office."
