Report of the Sub-committee on the Decimal System (appointed September 13, 1859)

"Mr. Jessup's scheme" was evaluated by a committee chaired by Thomas D. Smeaton. They passed 9 resolutions, the first being "That the adoption of a uniform system of notation in money, weights, and measures would of itself prove of incalculable benefit to the community". Yet, they later propose that the sovereign, the 'lb. avoirdupois', the imperial gallon and the foot be the basis standard measurements. This discussion was most likely prompted by the publication of "A Complete Decimal System of Money and Measures," by William Henry Bowlestone Jessop in 1855. Jessop, went on to publish "Flindersland and Sturtland; or, The Inside and Outside of Australia" in London 1862. In 1937, a royal commission recommended Australia adopt decimal currency but it was not adopted until 1966. 8vo, 1 leaf. Ferguson 5725.
