Reports of Cases Argued and Determined in the Courts of Exchequer and Exchequer Chamber, Vol. 11: From Hilary Term, 6 Vict. To Trinity Vacation, 6 . Cases and Principal Matters (Classic Reprint)

This book concerns the history, controversies, and experiences of military encampments, which the author frames as places suspended between war and peace, as sites of preparation and transformation, both destructive and regenerative. They are sites of violence, protest, and oppression, but also of social engagement and cultural interaction. The author traces military encampments from their ancient origins to the present day, showing how they have shaped cities, landscapes, and our imagination. In the process, the author excavates the layers of history sedimented in the earth itself and embedded in the politics and literature of today. This book contributes to a timely reassessment of military encampments in an era defined by globalization, war on terror, and climate refugees.
