Reports of the First, Second, and Third Meetings of the Association of American Geologists and Naturalists

Reports Of The First, Second, And Third Meetings Of The Association of American Geologists and Naturalists by Association of American Geologists and Naturalists is a mid-19th-century compilation of the early proceedings of the organization. The excerpt gathers field notes, discussions, and papers presented during the association’s meetings held in Philadelphia (1840–41) and Boston (1842), demonstrating how American geology was developing through interstate cooperation and published reports. It surveys broad topics—from Near Eastern and Asian regional geology, including rock types, mineral waters, and debates on biblical catastrophism, to North American studies of glacio-aqueous action and the interpretation of distinctive coastal and inland formations. A notable portion highlights the Appalachian coal measures, presenting a unified view of coal formation, structural frameworks across nine belt-like divisions, and the role of Stigmaria beds and roof/floor lithologies. The volume also records methodological advances, such as Richard C. Taylor’s relief-models for illustrating interior geology, and reflects a shift from drift theories to integrated field-based geologic reconstruction within a growing American scientific community.
