Moderate rubbing and some scuffing to boards, brief early annotation and owner signature ("Drury Lacy N Page") to front board, which is separated but secured by cords, rubbing and light wear to extremities, rear joint starting, chipping to spine ends, corners bumped and worn, later armorial bookplate ("Stearns") to front pastedown, later owner signature (of Samuel Doggett Junior, dated 1780) to front free endpaper, title page and head of page 1, additional abraded owner signature to title page and head of page 1. Moderate toning and light foxing to interior, faint dampstaining in a few places, tiny spark burns and small holes to a few leaves with minor loss to text in places but no loss to legibility, upper corner of leaf signature, very brief annotations in ink and marginal marks in pencil to three leaves. $1,750. * Second English-language edition. Coke's Reports are not reports in the conventional sense; they are highly detailed anthologies of precedents organized by topic. Taken together, they form the most extensive and detailed treatment of common law pleading that had yet appeared. A work of immense authority, it was often cited as The Reports, there being no need to mention the author's name. One of the later owners of this book may have been Boston attorney Samuel Doggett [1755-1817], a member of an old and important Massachusetts family who graduated from Harvard College in 1775 and was admitted to practice at the Inferior Court of Common Pleas in 1780.
