Speech permeates the Hebrew Bible, but the representation of speech in the biblical text poses significant challenges for interpretation. By employing the methods and insights of modern linguistics, this study both describes and analyzes the syntactic devices used in representing speech in biblical narrative and delineates their functions and distributions within dialogue. As a complement to other forms of biblical criticism, this linguistic approach adds a crucial new dimension to the task of biblical interpretation. Bookseller Inventory #
