4pp extract, printed in double columns, illustrated with a small map showing the usual routes from Cairo to Khartoum and El Obeid, salvaged from a damaged issue of The Century Illustrated Monthly Magazine, Volume XXVIII, no. 5, September, 1884. The author, Late Bey on the General Staff of the Egyptian Army, calls for a British military expedition to rescue or avenge General Gordon. From the opening sentence, "At a time when the whole civilized world is anxiously looking for tidings of General Gordon, and hoping almost against hope that he may be extricated from his perilous position, it is not reassuring to reflect upon the ignorance and misstatements of the British authorities concerning the geography, topography, and peculiarities of a country which they have virtually occupied for eight years, and which was fully mapped out and described a generation ago." Open Letters section. Ultimately, the British would not send a relief force to Khartoum until January, 1885, -- two days after the besieged city fell -- and found Gordon had been killed.
