本论著研究的宗旨是东北流亡作家作品及创作历程。东北流亡作家作为一个独特的作家创作群体——东北作家群，崛起于20世纪30年代，应该是从鲁迅编辑并自费出版的“奴隶丛书”中收入萧红的《生死场》和萧军的《八月的乡村》开始。由于鲁迅为这两部作品都写了序，胡风还为《生死场》写了后记，一时间东北作家的作品引起了文坛的关注。陆续受到鲁迅关怀的东北作家还有端木蕻良、骆宾基等。此外，李辉英早与鲁迅有过来往。这样，萧红、萧军、李辉英及后来的舒群、罗烽、白朗、骆宾基等东北作家在上海出现，有的虽未加入左联，但他们的创作构成左翼文学重要的组成部分。特点是最早发出抗日的声音，第一次把中国现代文学与东北沦陷的广袤的黑土地，与侵略者铁蹄下的不屈人民、茂草、高梁紧紧地联系在一起，东北流亡作家作品及创作历程为中国左翼文学的发展提供了重要的精神力量，丰富了中国现代文学的艺术表现形式和艺术风格。 本文把关注和思考的焦点投向了探讨东北流亡作家小说创作及创作历程，特别是与东北文化精神的内在联系上，致力探寻东北流亡作家走出东北流亡青岛——上海——武汉、重庆——延安——香港、桂林时，东北地域文化精神对东北流亡作家的小说创作历程影响的各种表现及其意义。
