Resource, Region and Ruin: Understanding Conflict in Resource States

Why does wealth in the ground so often translate to conflict on the surface?

Resource, Region, and Ruin explores the paradox of resource-rich states plagued by instability, grievance, and underdevelopment. From the Niger Delta to Basra, Northern Alberta to Sudan, this book combines field research, economic theory, and political analysis to introduce the MASI framework—a powerful diagnostic tool for understanding conflict in extractive economies.

Bridging economics, public policy, public choice and political legitimacy, this work challenges the logic of top-down development and proposes a new pathway to efficiency, equity and inclusion in the resource state. Essential reading for policymakers, scholars, and community advocates navigating the complexities of natural wealth and structural justice.
