Item description from seller

A. C. D. CROMMELIN, "Results of the Total Solar Eclipse of May 29 and the Relativity Theory" in Nature, volume 104, 280 281, 13 November 1919. Offered in the full volume of Nature, xliii, 717pp. There is a slight impression of an old semi-fold in the left-hand part of the text from pp 240-390. Newly rebound in half-calf and linen-covered boards. Five raised bands on spine, with red and black spine labels. FINE condition, with the binding being new. [++] A. C. D. Crommelin reports on this spectacular verification of the Einstein theory of relativity ".the most famous eclipse experiment of all time, the first successful test of Albert Einstein s general theory of relativity. The solar eclipse of May 29, 1919, was the day astronomer Sir Arthur Eddington verified Einstein's general theory of relativity, by observing how stars near the sun were displaced from their normal positions."--Smithsonian Magazine, Elizabeth Landau, 2019, "A Total Solar Eclipse 100 Years Ago Proved Einstein s General Relativity." [++] "In 1919, British scientists led extraordinary expeditions to Brazil and Africa to test Albert Einstein s revolutionary new theory of general relativity in what became the century s most celebrated scientific experiment. The result ushered in a new era and made Einstein a global celebrity by confirming his dramatic prediction that the path of light rays would be bent by gravity."--Daniel Kennefick, "No Shadow of a Doubt: The 1919 Eclipse That Confirmed Einstein's Theory of Relativity." [++] "THE results obtained at the total solar eclipse of May 29 last were reported at a joint meeting of the Royal and the Royal Astronomical Societies, held on November 6. The stations occupied were Sobral, in North Brazil, and Principe Island. Two cameras were employed at Sobral, the 13-in. objective of the Greenwich astrographic equatorial, and a 4-in. lens.together with an 8-in. ccelostat, by the Royal Irish Academy. It was realised, before the expedition started, that the ccelostat was scarcely suitable for observations of such extreme precision as were required to detect and measure the small shift in the places of the stars that might be produced by the sun's attraction. War conditions, however, made it impossible to construct a suitable equatorial mounting, though it is hoped that this may be done before the eclipse of 1922."--from the Crommelin paper. [++] 3-part paper by E. Cunningham, "Einstein's Relativity Theory of Gravitation", December 4, 11, 18 1919, pp 354-6, 374-6; 394-5. [++] Also includes the following papers: W.H. Dines, "The Deflection of Light During a Solar Eclipse", page 393, 18 December 1919 (with Lewis Fry Richardson responding at the end of the Dinnes on pp 393-4). Also Oliver Lodge, "Gravitation and Light", 334, 374, 394; Alex Anderson, "The Displacement of Light and Rays Passing near the Sun", same page; Joseph Larmor, "Gravitation and Light" pg 412; Rutherford and A.H. Compton, "Radio-Activity and Gravitation", pg 412.…
