Retrieving Michigan's Buried Past: The Archaeology of the Great Lakes State

This volume presents more than a hundred centuries of human occupation in the Great Lakes state. It covers the full range of prehistoric occupations in the state and also examines the archaeology of Michigan from the time of the first European exploration to the dawn of the 20th century.

The occasion of Michigan's one-hundred-fiftieth anniversary of statehood on January 26, 1987 provided the basis for numerous public celebrations of Michigan's past, present, and future. Among the suggested commemorations was a new book on Michigan archaeology to replace James Fitting's 1975 update of his 1970 The Archaeology of Michigan. After 12 years, an enormous amount of survey work, and a significant number of additional excavations, "Retrieving Michigan's Buried Past: The Archaeology of the Great Lakes State" is at last reality. Comprised of thirteen chapters contributed by distinguished archaeologists, the book covers not only the full range of prehistoric occupations in the state but also gives extensive coverage of the archaeology of Michigan from the time of first European exploration to the dawn of the twentieth century.
