Retrograde Degeneration in the Spinal Nerves : A Dissertation Submitted to the Faculty of the Ogden Graduate School of Science in Candidacy Foe the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Classic Reprint)

This book delves into the intriguing world of retrograde degeneration, a phenomenon that occurs when a nerve is severed, impacting the nerve’s connection to its cell of origin. The author, building upon the work of numerous researchers from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, meticulously examines the effects of nerve section on various parts of the nervous system, particularly focusing on the spinal nerves. The book meticulously analyzes the literature on retrograde degeneration, particularly as it relates to spinal nerves. The author carefully catalogues findings from autopsies and animal experiments, drawing attention to the changes observed in the central stumps of severed nerves, ventral and dorsal roots, spinal ganglia, and the spinal cord itself. The book goes beyond a simple review of the literature, presenting the author’s own experimental observations conducted on white rats. This hands-on approach allows for a deeper exploration of the topic, challenging previously held assumptions and offering fresh perspectives. By tracing the effects of nerve section on young and adult rats over varying periods, the author examines the relationship between age, regeneration, and the extent of nerve cell destruction. The author’s insights offer a unique contribution to the understanding of this complex process, pushing the boundaries of scientific knowledge in this field.
