GEORGE BIRIMISA was the first openly gay playwright to receive a Rockefeller Foundation Grant. He later won the Drama-Logue Award for his 1978 play Rainbow in the Night. Daddy Violet, the 1967 play included in this collection, opened at the Caffe Cino and went on to tour college campuses in the U.S. and Canada. Village Voice drama critic Ross Wetzsteon wrote of the 1968 play Georgie Porgie, Birimisa's considerable talent [is] as fluid as it is raw, as passionate as it is brutal.
The founder and director of Intergeneration Writing Workshops in San Francisco, George won the Harry Hay award in 2005 as ...noted playwright, teacher and cherished inspiration across the generations of the LGBT community.
