He woke on the morning of the reckoning in his own house, in the body of a beggar, with the bow waiting in the storeroom and the suitors sleeping in the hall.
The Reckoning is the fourth and final book in the Return to Ithaca series - the day twenty years concluded. Odysseus disguised as a beggar in his own palace, watching, counting, planning. The reunion with Telemachus in Eumaeus's hut. Argos the dog, ancient and dying, lifting his head one final time. Penelope bringing the bow to the hall. The suitors failing. The stringing. The arrow through the axes. The fighting. And then, at last: the test of the bed, the night of the telling, the reunion with Laertes on the farm, the peace imposed on the families of the dead.
And the morning after. The ordinary morning on the shore of his own island, with his wife in the palace above him and his son and his kingdom and the specific and particular life he had been trying to get back to for twenty years.
