RETURN is a collection of a decade of photography, poetry, and essays documenting Korea's cultural traditions and spiritual beliefs around death, the afterlife, and reincarnation. In an effort to heal the trauma of losing his mother at young age, as well as to release his own fear of death following a near death experience, author and photojournalist Chanho Park traveled to the settings of death across South Korea, photographing funeral sites, Confucian ancestral ceremonies, Buddhist cremation ceremonies, and Shamanic rituals. Through masterful artistry and striking black and white photographs, Park captures the energy and spirit of these rituals that honor the dead and those they leave behind. Punctuated by original personal essay and poetic reflections, RETURN chronicles the stories Park captured in his handwritten, personal notebooks during his decade of documenting Korean death and the images, myths, and rituals that surround it.
