This book consists of articles regarding Saint Leo, from the time of the Apostles to the author's own era. The author emphasizes Saint Leo's institution of fasting for all people and argues that mortifying the self in food and drink consumption is within our grasp, particularly when denying ourselves sinful gratifications. As the body is weakened by fasting and abstinence, so the soul is strengthened by repeated prayers, frequent reception of the holy sacraments, attending Mass, making the stations of the cross, visiting the Blessed Sacrament, reading spiritual books, and doing good works, particularly those of charity. If we perform any of these devotions with a good intention, the Lenten season will be one of many spiritual benedictions for ourselves and our friends.
