The Revised Code of the Laws of Mississippi, in Which are Comprised All such Acts of the General Assembly, of a Public Nature, as were in Force at the End of the Year, 1823; With a General Index. Natchez, [Miss.]: F. Baker, 1824. iv, 743 pp. Octavo (8-3/4" x 5-1/2"). Contemporary calf with crude recent cloth rebacking, blind fillets to boards, retained lettering piece to spine, free endpapers renewed, pastedowns and endleaves retained, hinges mended with cloth tape. Moderate rubbing and some scuffing to boards, ink library stamps to front board, inkstamp and owner signature (of James Green, dated 1824) to front pastedown. Moderate toning (somewhat lighter or heavier in places) and light foxing to interior. $150. * This was the first compilation of Mississippi law published after it was made a state in 1817. Alongside topics such as Indians, Indian Agents, Abusive Language (punishable only when uttered by a "negro or mulatto" to "a white person") and Bastardy, it features a 22-page section of laws dedicated to "Slaves, Free Negroes and Mulattoes." The James Green who owned this copy may have been the Natchez-area landowner and judge who was a prominent supporter of the Mississippi State Colonization Society.
