Original maroon cloth binding with gilt lettering on front board and spine. Some dirt on front board, corners are rubbed, and there is some shelf wear to the spine edges. Greenish-tan floral pastedowns and endpapers. Interior pages clean and free of marginalia, very slight browning. Condition assigned based on missing color plates, otherwise the condition of the book is good: pages are clean with only slight marginalia, and the binding and floral pastedowns are in good contition for the age of the book. All color plates are missing, but black and white photographs and diagrams are extant. The frontispiece is a portrait of A. Johnson Dodge, followed by diagrams of the skeleton, muscular and arterial systems. The contents include discussions of anatomy, cavities and viscera, the vascular system and blood, bacteria, and chemistry of the body as these relate to embalming, as well as apparent and real death, preparing bodies for transportation, funeral etiquette, and more.
