About this title

A 1960s revolutionary, whose violent actions have caused him to go into hiding as a Cape Cod lobsterman, lets himself get close to a woman and is blackmailed at his wedding when a stranger threatens to reveal his true identity and turn him in

From Kirkus Reviews:

Abrahams's thrillers, generally first-rate (Pressure Drop, 1989, etc.), usually hinge on the sins of the past (Nazi intrigue, etc.) staining the present. Here, as in Hard Rain (1987), it's violent 60's radicalism that primes the plot--a surprisingly strained affair about a longtime fugitive forced to track down his former comrades-in-arms. For 20 years, Charlie Ochs has been laying low as a Cape Cod lobsterman, hiding the secret that he's really Blake Wrightman, wanted for a campus-bombing death. No matter (as we learn in flashbacks) that Charlie, persuaded to plant the bomb by two fellow students--beautiful Rebecca and wily Malik--tried to render it a dud: Somehow the device went off beneath the ROTC building anyway, accidentally killing little Ronnie Pleasance. But now Charlie's fallen in love with and impregnated sweet Emily--and on the eve of their wedding, he's visited by two government agents who explain that his cover's been blown (by an old pal, he learns) and who make him an offer he can't refuse: Track down Rebecca and turn her in, or go to jail himself. So Charlie reluctantly sets out, starting with a visit to the old campus, and soon uncovers the bomb-builder himself--a nerd-turned-millionaire--and then Malik, now a soft- bellied real-estate developer. Meanwhile, Yvonne, a 40-ish radical who's obviously Rebecca, plots an armored-car heist; the government agents hint at their real target--Rebecca's radical-lawyer dad, whom Abrahams might as well have called William Kunstler but didn't; and Ronnie Pleasance's dad gets tipped off to Charlie's new life and comes after Emily with a razor. A revelation that lifts Charlie's heart, a shooting, and an explosive climax (heavy on the poetic justice) resolve matters neatly, if not artfully. Charlie's a winsome hero, and Rebecca a sturdy villain, but moral posturings and overplotting thicken the narrative into an opaque gel, despite the madcap action. As they used to say, it's a real bummer. -- Copyright ©1992, Kirkus Associates, LP. All rights reserved.
