This book deals with historical cases of problems in the structural
design of aircraft, missiles, spacecraft and long-span bridges where unique problems were encountered in the aeroelastic or dynamic responses of the flexible structures. More than thirty cases are presented from the Wright Brothers to the Saturn rocket. The book is dedicated to Professor Raymond L. Bisplinghoff (1917-1985), who was an international icon in the field of structural dynamics. Chapter 1 is his Gardner Lecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1984, "The History of Aeroelasticity."
Hubert I. Flomenhoft was born in 1925 in Philadelphia, PA, and re-
ceived the degree of Bachelor of Aeronautical from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1945. He was on active duty in the U.S. Navy until August 1946. He received a Master of Science degree in Aeronautical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in November 1947 and was one of the original group of research engineers in the structural dynamics group organized by Professor Bisplinghoff in the Aeroelastic and Structures Research Laboratory. This was the beginning of an entire career as an aeronautical engineer that was strongly influenced by Professor Bisplinghoff. In 1949, Flomenhoft went to work in the same office in the Bureau of Aeronautics of the Navy Department where Bisplinghoff had worked earlier. In 1961, he went to the Federal Institute of Technology in Zrich, Switzerland, to study for a doctorate under Professor Manfred Rauscher, under whom Bisplinghoff had also studied just a few years earlier when he earned his Doctor of Science degree. Subsequently, Flomenhoft joined Allied
Research Associates when Bisplinghoff was on its Board of Directors. he later went to the Helio Aircraft Company where Bisplinghoff was also on the Board of Directors. In 1970, Flomenhoft joined Raytheon's Missile Systems Division, making a career shift from very slow (STOL) airplanes to very fast guided missiles.
He is an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and served on the National Council of the Institute of Aerospace Sciences in 1961. He served on the AIAA Technical Committee on Atmospheric Flight Mechanics and initiated the standards working group which produced the Recommended Practice for Atmospheric and Space Vehicle Coordinate Systems, dated 1992.
