About the Author
Dr. Jolie Bookspan knows abs. A career military scientist, she has a black belt in karate and was undefeated in the ring as a Muay Thai kickboxer. After serving in the Army, she was research physiologist for the United States Navy, studying survival in extreme environments from undersea to climbing mountains to outer space an interest that began as a child when she sat barefoot in the snow watching her grandfather go ice swimming every day. As a scientist, she has carried gear up and down the mountains and deserts of India, Nepal, Asia, and Northern Africa; swam to work in an underwater laboratory; was advisor to The Discovery Channel and police and military training departments; and was professor of anatomy at a college in the mountains of Mexico where the entrance exam was getting up there without a nosebleed. Left paralyzed after breaking her back, neck, and most of everything else in an accident, she rehabbed using her own methods. She started over again as a white belt and earned her black belt a second time. Jolie and her husband Paul were inducted into the International Black Belt Hall of Fame and were the Eastern USA Martial Arts Association Man and Women of the Year 2004. Harvard clinicians have called her "The St. Jude of the Joints" in her private practice in sports medicine. She doesn t do crunches.
