This book examines the factors that influenced the prevalence of rickets in London children during the early 20th century. It builds on a previous study by the author, which had identified various dietary and environmental factors that contributed to the development of rickets. The author sought to determine the relative importance of these factors, particularly focusing on the role of socioeconomic deprivation. The book presents a detailed analysis of the medical records of over 500 children, both those suffering from rickets and healthy controls. The author also conducted extensive home visits to assess the living conditions of the families involved. This interdisciplinary approach, combining medical and social data, provides a comprehensive insight into the complex causes of rickets, shedding light on the impact of poverty, housing, and nutrition on child health.
