Madrid and the Spanish Economy, 1560-1850 by David R. Ringrose argues that Madrid's rapid growth as a capital city created an economic parasite that crippled the development of central Spain. It explains how Madrid dominated the interior, forcing it into a stagnant, self-sufficient, and subsistence-oriented role while separating it from the rising coastal, maritime-based economy.
