About the Author
Dr. Estella Conwill Majozo is a professor, poet, performance artist, and activist. Her books include the award-winning Come Out the Wilderness (The Feminist Press); Middle Passage: 105 Days (Africa World Press); Blessings for a New World (Third World Press); Libation: A Literary Pilgrimage through the African American Soul (Harlem River Press); and Jiva Telling Rites (Third World Press). She is a member of the collaborative team that includes sculptor Houston Conwill (her brother) and architect Joseph DePace. Their monuments include Revelations: The Martin Luther King Memorial in San Francisco, cited by Ebony Magazine as the most unique of all the King Monuments; Rivers at the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, which received the Excellence in Design Award, Art Commission of New York; and The New Ringshout: A Tribute to African Burial Ground in New York City. The GSA African Burial Ground Project, of which The New Ringshout is a part, was recognized by the White House with Preserve America Presidential Award! Ringshout! is a tale of a great and powerful people who were called by Almighty God to survive the horrors of slavery and resist some of the most brutal oppression inflicted upon mankind in the past five hundred years. It is an ongoing, interactive tale that features you as the main character and, as you step into your sacred purpose, an indomitable hero.
