Carlson's project for a twenty or so year period from around 1913 to the 1930s - often with publisher John Martin - was creating participatory children's books: Riddles, puzzles, activities and other gimmicks, The earliest known book illustration that Carlson did was for Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow Washington Irving s Stories Retold by Mary Paterson, published in 1913. This somewhat later - likely around 1930 - mock up appears to be a marriage of his work as a book illustrator and the interactive work that he did with Martin for his magazine John Martin's Book (which ran from 1912-1933 and for which Carlson contributed around 50 covers and most of the puzzles and riddles.) see: https://www.tcj.com/figuring-out-george-carlson-part-1/ Size: Octavo (8vo).
