Rise of the Gatewatch : A Visual History

Part art book, part reference guide, Rise of the Gatewatch offers both longtime fans and new readers a compelling introduction to the characters at the heart of Magic’s modern storytelling.

For more than 25 years, Magic: The Gathering has built a rich and evolving Multiverse shaped by powerful Planeswalkers―mages capable of traveling between worlds and altering the course of history. Among them stands the Gatewatch, Magic’s first unified team of heroes, assembled to defend the Multiverse from existential threats.

Magic: The Gathering: Rise of the Gatewatch is a visual history of this iconic group, tracing the origins and evolution of its core members―including Jace Beleren, Gideon Jura, Chandra Nalaar, Liliana Vess, Nissa Revane, Ajani Goldmane, and Teferi―as they move from individual journeys to a shared mission. Their stories unfold against the backdrop of major conflicts, culminating in their confrontation with the dragon Nicol Bolas.

Bringing together a curated selection of the game’s most striking artwork―from card illustrations to promotional and convention-exclusive pieces―this volume presents many images outside of the card frame for the first time, paired with accessible lore that connects characters, events, and the broader narrative of the Multiverse.
