Risks and Opportunities: Integrated Management of Environmental Conflict and Change

Environmental change inevitably throws up conflicts and disputes. This book explores the full range of potential conflicts through a series of detailed case studies and a fully developed project management framework. It covers all the key issues surrounding managing change and emphasizes the need to develop an active and strategic approach which identifies the interests and abilities of all the stakeholders.
The case studies provide in-depth material on conflicting uses of urban, agricultural and natural environments, and show different types of conflict and different methods of conflict resolution. They are accompanied by a self-teaching manual and exercises which enable readers to acquire the necessary practical skills, and organizations to build multi-disciplinary teams and other cooperative processes.

John Handmer is Innovation Professor at RMIT University, Melbourne and Adjunct Professor, Centre for Resource and Environmental Studies, Australian National University. He is also currently Visiting Professor, Flood Hazard Research Centre, Middlesex University, London.

Valerie A. Brown is Director of the Local Sustainability Project, Fenner School of Environment and Society, Australian National University; and Emeritus Professor of Environmental Health, University of Western Sydney. She has held national advisory positions in public health, environmental management and higher education, and presented innovative programs in these fields in the Asia-Pacific, Canada and Europe. Valerie is the author of over 200 research papers and 12 books on linking social and environmental issues and social change, the most recent being Towards whole-of-community engagement: a toolkit of strategies 2004 (with Heather Aslin); Sustainability and health: supporting global integrity in public health Earthscan 2005 (with J.
