For centuries, Baghdad was the undisputed center of global intellect. The legendary House of Wisdom housed the greatest collection of scientific, philosophical, and mathematical manuscripts the world had ever seen, translating Greek, Persian, and Indian knowledge into Arabic. It was the beating heart of the Islamic Golden Age―until the apocalyptic arrival of Hulagu Khan. In 1258, the Mongol army laid siege to Baghdad, unleashing a level of destruction that permanently altered the course of human history. When the city fell, the Mongols did not just slaughter the population; they systematically targeted the city's vast libraries. Eyewitnesses recorded a tragedy so profound that it became a dark legend: so many millions of priceless books were thrown into the Tigris that the river ran black with ink for days, while the blood of scholars turned the waters red. This gripping historical account reconstructs the glory and the catastrophic end of the intellectual capital of the world. You will trace the invaluable texts that were lost forever, the few brave scholars who managed to smuggle manuscripts to safety, and the massive vacuum of knowledge left in the wake of the Mongol horde. Witness the day human progress stalled. Understand the devastating fragility of accumulated wisdom and the sheer historical trauma inflicted when the world’s greatest repository of science was thrown into the river.
