This scholarly study examines how legal disputes were resolved in medieval Ireland and Wales, focusing on the shift from customary practices to more formal court-based systems. It explores the role of personal sureties, individuals who guaranteed anothers conduct or obligations and how these arrangements structured early legal and social order. Drawing on surviving medieval legal texts, the book analyses how communities balanced tradition, kinship ties, and emerging judicial authority. It highlights the gradual development of more centralised legal processes and the ways in which local customs were adapted or replaced over time.
