The Road to Mecca

Discover one of the twentieth century’s most celebrated spiritual memoirs in Muhammad Asad’s unforgettable story of cross-cultural discovery and faith.

In Road to Mecca, Leopold Weiss―born into a Jewish family in Lemberg―chronicles his transformation into Muhammad Asad, an internationally respected Islamic scholar and diplomat. Beginning with his youthful disillusionment with post-World War I European society, Asad embarks on extensive travels across the Middle East as a foreign correspondent. Through encounters with desert Bedouins, regional leaders, and classical Islamic traditions, he documents an intellectual and spiritual awakening that culminates in his conversion to Islam.

This classic autobiographical work combines vivid desert travel narrative with profound philosophical inquiry, providing readers with:

• Firsthand historical accounts of Arabia and the Middle East during the 1920s and 1930s
• An articulate insider view of Islamic theology, philosophy, and everyday practice
• A deeply personal reflection on bridge-building between Western civilisation and the Islamic world

Whether you seek historical insight into the modern Muslim world or an inspiring tale of spiritual conviction, Asad’s narrative remains an enduring literary masterpiece.

From his work as a journalist in the Middle East before his conversion, Muhammad Asad became an author, translator of Islamic literature, and international diplomat. His written works include his famed English translation of the Qur'an and translations of the Prophet's oral teachings.
