Roadway Safety and Tort Liability, the second edition of Roadway Defects and Tort Liability, provides an extensive review of roadway design, roadway maintenance, traffic safety and human factors aspects of roadway safety. This edition has been expanded to include many important new topics. The first half examines the various structural components that make roads either safe or unsafe. It guides you through common roadway defects, explores historical standards, accident circumstances, and legal arguments. The second half provides an overview of lawsuits brought against states, and municipalities for accidents claimed to have been caused by one or more of the roadway safety topics discussed in the first section of the book.

Dr. John C. Glennon, president of John C. Glennon, Chartered, Overland Park, KS, is a world-renowned roadway safety consultant and expert. Over his forty-two-year career, he has led and participated in research projects dealing with most of the major topics in this book. He has published extensively in professional papers, research reports, training manuals, and books. He has also given presentations at many major roadway safety meetings over the last thirty-four years. As an expert witness, retained by either the plaintiff or the defendent, he has participated in several hundred roadway defect cases covering every topic in this book.

As a professional engineer, Dr. Glennon has a broad understanding of both the tort liability for roadway defects and the role of the expert witness as an independent and unbiased advisor to judges and juries. His expert testimony encompasses roadway safety, roadway design, traffic engineering, accident reconstruction, and the human factors of driver behavior.

Paul F. Hill is a retired law school librarian and a member of the Nebraska Bar. He lives in Omaha, Nebraska. He is an experienced legal researcher and writer, and has coauthored books published by Lawyers and Judges Publishing Company on bicycle, motorcycle, pedestrian, and bus accidents. Mr. Paul F. Hill is a Nebraska lawyer, an academic, and a two-wheeled legal specialist. He has A.B., M.L.S., and J.D. degrees. He is currently on the staff of the Creighton University School of Law in Omaha, Nebraska, where he teaches Legal Research and is the legal research librarian. His research specialty is bicycle and motorcycle law. Hill has ridden both bicycles and motorcycles extensively, having owned Beneli, BSA, Honda, Kawasaki, and Harley-Davidson motorcycles. Hill was the author of the Nebraska Legal Research and Reference Manual (1983), and co-author of Bicycle Accident Reconstruction and Litigation (1996), published by Lawyers &Publishing Co. and MitchieÕs Research Guide to Nebraska Law (1995).
