He was drafted from Puerto Rico, where he spoke Spanish, when he was just eighteen. At first fans laughed at his Spanish accent and some even disliked him for the color of his skin.

Roberto worked hard to learn English and improve his baseball skills. He became one of the game's greatest hitters while he played for the Pittsburgh Pirates.

He was the first Latin American player to have 3,000 hits and his legacy of kindness and record breaking continues to inspire players.

About the Author

Andrew Conte works as an award-winning newspaper reporter, and he teaches journalism. He has written two other sports books The Color of Sundays, about the racial integration of the National Football League, and Breakaway, about the Pittsburgh Penguins hockey team. Andrew lives near Pittsburgh.

Bryan Janky (Illustrator) attended college at the American Academy of Art in Chicago, where he obtained a degree in illustration. Bryan has always focused his skills and efforts towards becoming a children's book illustrator. Aside from illustrating, Bryan draws caricature portraits and designs customized resumes.

Jennifer Mujezinovic is a professional portrait artist and painted the cover portrait for this All About… series title.
