Robotics Integrated Design And Practice

This book introduces the integrated design and practice for both serial robots and parallel robots as well as mobile robots. The design and construction of a robot with complete obstacle avoidance functions is introduced step by step, starting by introducing the working principles and knowledges on intelligent sensing, autonomous positioning and navigation, motion and control technologies, and then the robot control system and components. The main purpose of this book is to guide students to apply their theoretical knowledge onto practical robot design and constructions, and to enhance their interests in learning new knowledge and new technology. This approach cultivates the ability of the students to practice their skills, independent thinking and teamwork. With thorough study, students may come to understand the theoretical knowledge of robotic systems and master the abilities of comprehensive engineering design, which would help lay a solid foundation for their future career development. This book is characterized by the combination of theory, engineering design and practice, and it is especially suitable for both senior undergraduate and postgraduate students majoring in robotics. It is also suitable for those scientific and technological researchers engaged in the fields of robot research, development, and application.

Zeming Fan received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees all in engineering in 1993, 1999, and 2002, respectively. After obtaining his PhD from Xi'an University of Technology, China, he continued his research work as a postdoctoral researcher, focusing mainly on robot design and its applications. In August 2005, he joined Northwestern Polytechnical University, China as an associate professor with the School of Automation. Currently, he is a full professor with his research focus mainly on artificial intelligence and intelligent autonomous humanoid robots, and he has published more than 60 peer-reviewed top journal papers and three books. Prof. Fan is also an active peer reviewer for several international journals. Prof. Fan has been PI for more than 20 research funds and has also won several excellent national awards for both competitions and teaching, e.g., the first prize in Shaanxi Teaching Achievement, the second prize of Shaanxi Provincial University Science and Technology Award, and several first-class teaching achievement awards of the university. Prof. Fan is also a chair professor of the national first-class major of "Robot Engineering" and the head of one national and two provincial first-class courses.

Xiaojun Yu received his PhD degree from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, in 2015. From January 2015 to August 2017, he worked as a postdoctoral research fellow at the same university. In 2017, he joined Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU), China, and currently, he is a tenured associate professor at NWPU's School of Automation. Dr Yu is an IEEE senior member, and his main research interests include robotic control and biomedical signal/image processing. Dr Yu has published more than 100 peer-reviewed journal papers and 40 international conference papers and has received the Outstanding Paper Award of SPIE BISC 2018 and IEEE ICICN 2021. He is also an active peer reviewer for several international journals.

Zhongkui Sun is a full professor and doctoral supervisor at Northwestern Polytechnical University, China. He served as a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Potsdam, Germany, as well as a visiting scholar at the University of South Florida, USA. He was awarded the Shaanxi Provincial Youth Science and Technology Rising Star Talent Support Program, the Shaanxi Provincial 'Special Support Program' for leading talents in science and technology innovation, and the Shaanxi Provincial 'Sanqin Talent Allowance'. Dr Sun is mainly engaged in the fields of robot dynamics and control, stochastic dynamics and control, and nonlinear vibration analysis and control, and has published more than 100 SCI papers in leading academic journals at home and abroad, such as Physical Review E, Nonlinear Dynamics, Journal of Sound and Vibration, and Science China. He has presided over six projects for the National Natural Science Foundation of China and two provincial and ministerial-level scientific research projects, and won the second prize in National Teaching Achievement, the first prize in Shaanxi Teaching Achievement, the second prize of Shaanxi Natural Science Award, the first prize of Shaanxi Science and Technology Award, and the first prize of Shaanxi Provincial University Science and Technology Award. Dr Sun has been invited to serve as a Topic Editor of Symmetry (IF: 2.713), the Young Editorial Board member of Applied Mathematics and Mechanics, and the Editorial Board member of Studies in Advanced Mathematics. He acts as a member of the 8th Youth Working Committee of the Chinese Society of Mechanics, a member of the Random Vibration Committee of the Chinese Society of Vibration Engineering, and a member of the Nonlinear Vibration Committee of the Chinese Society of Vibration Engineering.

Zhunga Liu received his BS, MS, and PhD degrees in Control Science and Engineering from Northwestern Polytechnical University (NWPU), China, in 2007, 2010, and 2014, respectively. After obtaining his PhD, he joined NWPU's School of Automation as a faculty, where he is currently a full professor and the associate dean. Prof. Liu's research interests focus mainly on intelligent information fusion, target tracking, detection, and recognition, on which he has published more than 50 peer-reviewed journal papers. Prof. Liu has been awarded the first prize in Natural Science from the Chinese Society of Automation, the second prize in Technological Invention by the Ministry of Education, the first prize in Natural Science of Shaanxi Province, and the Youth Science and Technology Award of the Chinese Society of Aeronautics, amongst others. He is currently serving as an associate editor of several international journals, e.g., including the International Journal of Approximate Reasoning.

Wenquan Liu is currently an engineer with the School of Automation at Northwestern Polytechnical University, China and the Deputy Director of the School's Experimental Teaching Center. Dr Liu has been engaged in experimental practice teaching. His research focuses mainly on motor control, power supply design, and intelligent network. Dr Liu has been the Principal Investigator (PI) for more than 20 scientific research projects to develop multi-functional charge and discharge equipment, data message network communication protocol software, and to design control module detectors. Dr Liu has extensive hands-on experience in the field of robot design, control, and applications.
