Nicholas Cooper is a designer and programmer of humanoid robots, used throughout the solar system for lucrative mining operations. One day, word comes from far-off Titan, one of Saturn's moons, that the robots are dangerously malfunctioning. Robots owned by two different companies are wrestling with each other when they should be working, violating fundamental laws of robot programming. Worse, three humans have been killed. Much to his horror, Nicholas is dispatched to Titan to investigate, as his knowledge makes him the best person to solve this fatal mystery.

This is his story. His investigation takes him across the solar system, from the dark, hostile landscape of Titan to the human settlements on Mars. He finds romance in the most unlikely of places, and winds up torn between his love of his life on Earth and his love for a Martian woman. All the while, he must untangle the shadowed events that occurred on Titan, the repercussions of which could affect the balance of peace on Earth and throughout the solar system.
