Rock Bottom Rising

For readers of The Four Winds and The Book Woman of Troublesome Creek, this historical novel follows a Tennessee mother fighting to rebuild her life after a felony conviction.

Ruby has lost almost everything. Branded by a 1925 felony conviction, separated from her children, and struggling to survive in rural Tennessee, she longs for one thing above all else—to earn a second chance with the family she loves.

When Ruby meets Frank, she dares to believe she has been given the fresh start she's long prayed for. But rebuilding a life requires more than hope, and the future she envisions comes with difficult choices, unexpected betrayals, and sacrifices she never imagined.

As the hardships of the Great Depression and World War II reshape Tennessee, Ruby refuses to surrender to her past. New opportunities created by the Tennessee Valley Authority and the Manhattan Project offer hope for a different future—but only if she can overcome the mistakes, betrayals, and sacrifices that continue to stand between her and the children she’s determined to reclaim.

Inspired by the true story of the author's grandmother, Rock Bottom Rising is a moving Appalachian historical novel about redemption, resilience, forgiveness, and the enduring power of a mother's love. Though it continues Ruby's journey from Rock Bottom, Tennessee, it can also be enjoyed as a standalone novel.
