Paperback. When a breathless hiker arrives at the Adirondacks Interior Outpost and informs Stacy, the first woman to be named crew chief in the Adirondacks, that someone has fallen from the cliffs above Avalanche Lake, Wayne, a newly recruited forester from Montana, uncovers evidence that a murder has recently taken place. With police far from the scene, the Department of Environmental Conservation's resources are stretched thin as a manhunt takes place amidst news of a bank robbery connected to the murder. The foresters and police scramble to keep the criminals from escaping detection in the mountains while frantically working to keep hikers and campers out of harm's way. As the foresters endeavor to put their competitive natures aside and learn to work together, the flurry of press coverage strains relationships, and personalities and motivations collide in the community and among their own ranks. Through it all, despite professional upheavals, the undeniable attraction between Stacy and Wayne continues to grow. This item is printed on demand. - Book 1 of 1: The Gansted Trilogy
What happens when a routine wilderness rescue uncovers a murder and a killer may still be somewhere in the mountains?
Wayne Gansted has barely begun his new job as a forest ranger in New York’s Adirondack Park when a fallen hiker is discovered below the cliffs of Mount Colden along the shore of Avalanche Lake. What first appears to be a tragic accident quickly reveals something far more sinister. The man was likely murdered, and Wayne climbs Mount Holden to verify his suspicions. It becomes clear that whoever killed him may still be at large in the wilderness.
As the investigation collides with the fallout from a brazen bank robbery, Wayne is thrown into a dangerous pursuit across some of the Adirondacks’ most unforgiving terrain. Ably directed by Stacy Ricchetti, the park’s first female crew chief, he must navigate not only the threats hiding in the backcountry but also the political tensions, old resentments, and competing interests between park management and the state police affecting the land and the campers they have sworn to protect.
For Wayne, the Adirondacks were supposed to offer a fresh start closer to his family. Instead, his first days on the job become a test of instinct, courage, and survival. And as danger draws Wayne and Stacy closer together, their growing connection may prove just as complicated as the wilderness around them.
Blending adventure, mystery, romance, and a vivid portrait of lives of those people who work in the wilderness. Between a Rock . . . launches K. Eric Crook’s Gansted Trilogy with a story of danger, duty, family, and the fight to protect the places we all cherish.
