Rocks, Roots and Rocky Mountains is the captivating story of my 33-day solo journey hiking the Colorado Trail, as told from a geologist's perspective. It is the second in a series and is written in the form of daily logs originally transcribed from my daily journals, then embellished with additional details resulting from further recollection and research. Each day brings the reader with me on my fascinating encounters with other hikers as well as the challenges of navigating through 486 miles of rugged alpine trail. Written for both the hiker and armchair reader, I included stories about the ever-changing scenery, terrain, and terrifying storms, along with frequent observations and explanations about those mysterious rocks beneath my feet. Beautifully illustrated with over 30 stunning photos and figures, the reader will find this book both informative and entertaining, while sharing my experiences of 33 unforgettable days on the Colorado Trail! I am a retired geoscience advisor since 2017 living near Pittsburgh, PA. Throughout my 38-year career as a geologist, I have worked for numerous companies in the exploration and production sector of the petroleum industry, while living in such places as West Virginia, Pennsylvania, Kentucky and Texas. During that time my passion was exploring the earth in the search for hydrocarbons. Today I am equally passionate about exploring the world on foot via long distance backpacking adventures. I have traveled across the US and Europe in search of long distance hiking adventures.
