An early newspaper printing, published in the *Portland Transcript. A Weekly Journal Devoted to Literature, News, Etc.* at Portland, Maine. Vol. 7, No. 10, Saturday, August 19, 1843. Folio (11" x 14"). pp. [145]-152. Neatly removed from a bound volume. Moderate scattered foxing, slight stain at fore edge, the lower right corner is toned and lightly chipped, very good. Roger Malvin's Burial, one of Hawthorne's "darker stories" was first published anonymously in *The Token* in 1832. It was not collected in book form until 1846 with the publication of *Mosses from an Old Manse*. This version of the story appeared in the *Portland Transcript* (reprinted from the *Democratic Review*) under Hawthorne's name.
