Roll of the Dice outlines the first four months of World War I -- specifically, August-November 1914. While addressing events on the Eastern Front, the Serbian Front, at sea, and away from the battlefield, the book's special emphasis is on Germany's gambles to quickly defeat her enemies in the West so as to avoid a lengthy, two-front war of attrition against the immensely powerful combination of Britain, France, and Russia. The book is the second in a series that summarizes the First World War for general readers. The author's first book, Explosion, covers the events leading up to the conflict's outbreak.
