Rollei: The Camera That Changed Photography: The Definitive History of Franke & Heidecke - From the Original Rolleiflex to the SL66, Plus Collector's

Rollei: The Camera That Changed Photography
You have seen their images your entire life without knowing what made them. The square-format portrait that defined fashion photography's golden age. The candid street photograph that revealed a stranger's private moment. The documentary image that changed how you understood a distant place. Behind thousands of photographs that shaped twentieth-century visual culture stood a single, unlikely camera: a box with two lenses, held at waist level, that demanded patience in an age of accelerating speed.
This is the definitive history of Franke & Heidecke and the Rolleiflex—how two mechanics in a provincial German city created the professional standard for medium-format photography, dominated the market for three decades, and eventually succumbed to the technological revolution they had helped shape. From the 1929 original through the perfectioned F-series, from the ambitious SL66 to the failed 35mm gamble, from multiple bankruptcies to licensed brand survival, this book traces the complete industrial and cultural trajectory.
Inside you will find: the engineering decisions that created the twin-lens reflex and the business decisions that nearly destroyed the company; the photographers—Vivian Maier, Richard Avedon, and generations of professionals—who chose this specific instrument; the complete collector's reference with serial numbers, authentication methods, and market valuation; and the ethical and practical guidance for building a collection that preserves these mechanical masterpieces for future generations.
Whether you shoot a Rolleiflex weekly, bid on vintage cameras monthly, or simply want to understand how objects acquire meaning beyond their function, this book provides the authoritative foundation that scattered online sources and partisan manufacturer histories cannot offer.
