About the Author
Hugh Macmillan (1833-1903) was a Scottish pastor who served as the Free Church of Scotland's General Assembly Moderator in 1897. He wrote a lot about theology and the interaction between God and the natural world. His best-selling book, Bible Teachings in Nature, was published in 15 editions in the UK and the USA and was multilingual. The eldest of Margaret (née Macfarlane) and Alexander Macmillan's nine children, he was born on September 17, 1833, in Aberfeldy. His parents were merchants. He first attended Hill Street Academy in Edinburgh after attending school in Aberfeldy. At the University of Edinburgh, he started studying for an arts degree and then for a medical degree before quitting to join the Free Church of Scotland, which had been founded in 1843. He received his education at New College in Edinburgh. He spent his last years of preaching at Greenock's 70 Union Street. He co-founded the Clan MacMillan Society in 1892 and led it as its Chief from 1892 to 1896. He left his job in 1901. He died on May 24, 1903, at his residence in West Edinburgh, 2 Murrayfield Road, and was laid to rest in Dean Cemetery. The burial is located on its southern wall in the first northern addition, backing up to the original cemetery.
