One of a series originally published earlier in the 19th century, retelling historical tales from different countries. Comprises 13 stories, including 'Bertha; or the Court of Charlemagne', 'The Last of the Breton Kings', and several with a more mystical content (eg 'The Dream-Girl'). This edition published by Frederick Warne and Co, a reprint from Chandos Classics reproduced with the original engraved illustrations by Thomas Landseer (1793-1880, elder brother of the more famous Sir Edwin Landseer), is undated but presumed to be between 1890 and 1900 (lists of other reprints in Frederick Warne and Co's catalogue at the end of the book include reprints by Frances Hodgson Burnett, none later than 1888). Hardback in overall good condition, cover in navy cloth with gold spine titles, spotted and bumped at top & bottom of spine & at corners. Top edge gilded. Binding firm. Text (560pp + extra pages listing other publications) mostly good, with discoloration of endpapers & foxing of title pages. Page edges have been cut, so are uneven (a few pages remain uncut, especially in middle of book).
