The Romance of Publishing. An Agent Recalls Thirty-Three Years with Authors and Editors.

The author shares anecdotes about the world of publishing, discusses the business aspects of the industry, and explains how writers get their works published

In detailed recollection, Jackinson, long-time agent (and sometime publisher, poet, and teacher of writing) lifts the veil covering the shadowy world where book, movie, and TV manuscripts and proposals evolve amid changes, negotiations, and guess-work; many good ideas, he shows, fail to materialize. Among projects he agented were deals involving Howard Hughes, a book about the notorious Zebra killings in San Francisco, and assorted literary hoaxes, less or more famous. The rapid litany of publishing names and incidents is fascinating, but the sparse continuity may leave readers a bit at sea. Still, the book, as a sort of selected career diary, conveys well the point of view of a dedicated literary agent and may stir interest in his other writings, which he frequently mentions.
