In these 307 pages, the author takes a romantic look at the development of railways in America - beginning when they were in competition with canals as a means by which goods could be moved about. Very thoroughly illustrated - includes posters of the day, photographs, catoons and maps. LEARN more about : the bell-rope, telegraph, Mohawk River, the Utica and Schenectady, Cobden and sink holes. Cond : Boards are red with gilt lettering. Light wear at all fore points. Frontisphoto is loose - else binding is sound . Clean - esp. given the vintage. Almost collectible !! Quote (p. 167) : " Cincinnati and Louisville were jockeying to become the northerm terminus. Four millions were called for the Charleston to Cincinnati road before 1837; business men along the line of survey paid in five dollar installments - but surveys were proving that the real cost ._._._. ."
