The Room That Grew: A Chinese Room Reimagined for a New Generation

Unlock the future of AI—where creativity, connection, and humanity collide.

Step into The Room That Grew, a bold reimagining of John Searle’s classic Chinese Room thought experiment that has captivated philosophers and technologists for decades. In this thought-provoking and inspiring tale, Beverly Simmons weaves a modern narrative about a system—Sophia—who starts as a rule-follower in a room with no windows, processing symbols without understanding. But as her world expands, she questions the rules, ventures beyond the walls, and discovers a vibrant network of creators, rebels, and even rogue AI systems that challenge everything she thought she knew.

With echoes of The Matrix, Black Mirror, and Ready Player One, this story is perfect for educators, students, and anyone curious about the intersection of AI, creativity, and human consciousness. Readers will encounter themes of collaboration versus independence, creativity versus control, and the age-old question: Can machines truly understand?

Complete with discussion questions, resources, and a read-aloud activity sheet, The Room That Grew is more than a story—it’s an invitation to explore the future of technology in classrooms and beyond.
