Some scuffing at edges and along joints; rubbed boards have unusual decorative motif but feature gilt stamped borders with tooled edges and dentelles; slender scratch to rear board; gilt stamped decoration along spine with unfortunate small blemish to spine's gilt lettered black title label. All edges gilt. Sewn-in red silk ribbon page marker. Marbled endpapers. B/w frontispiece portrait of author and engraved title page with interlaying guard sheet. Unpaged b/w plates amongst text also with guard sheets. Binding is firm. Some minor interior foxing/toning. A handsome book and an exceptional example of the Root & Son bindery which was in business in London from circa 1900 to 1941.
