The Rose and the Ring. This item is unavailable. The Rose and the Ring

"The Rose and the Ring" is a delightful satirical fairy tale and fireside pantomime that parodies the conventions of traditional folk stories. Written by William Makepeace Thackeray under the pseudonym M. A. Titmarsh, this classic work follows the intertwined fortunes of Prince Giglio of Paflagonia and Prince Bulbo of Crim Tartary. The narrative centers on a series of whimsical and often absurd events triggered by two magical objects: a rose and a ring, both of which possess the power to make their wearer appear irresistibly beautiful to anyone they encounter.

As the magical tokens pass from hand to hand, chaos ensues in the royal courts, leading to mistaken identities, unexpected romances, and humorous reversals of fortune. Thackeray's sharp wit shines through as he pokes fun at the pomposity of royalty and the tropes of romantic literature. Filled with memorable characters like the fairy Blackstick and the various courtiers caught in the spell of the magic charms, the story remains a charming example of Victorian humor and creative storytelling. This edition features the intricate illustrations of Gordon Browne, which bring to life the vibrant and comical world of Giglio and Bulbo, making it a timeless treasure for readers of all ages who enjoy clever fantasy and lighthearted satire.
