Rosh Hashanah: A Guide: Understanding the Jewish New Year, Its Traditions, Prayers, Shofar, Spiritual Meaning & How to Prepare

Understand Rosh Hashanah before you experience it.

Whether you're attending your first Rosh Hashanah service, welcoming a Jewish partner's family into your life, exploring your own roots, or simply curious what the holiday is actually about — this guide was written for you.

No prior knowledge assumed. No Hebrew required. Just clear, honest answers to the questions beginners actually have.

Inside, you'll learn:

• What Rosh Hashanah is, and why it's called the Jewish New Year

• Why the date changes every year on the calendar you use

• What actually happens at a Rosh Hashanah service — step by step

• What a machzor is, and how to follow along even if you've never held one

• The meaning behind the shofar, and what the blasts represent

• Why apples, honey, and round challah appear on the table

• What Tashlich is, and why some communities walk to water

• The idea of teshuvah — returning, reflecting, and starting over

• What to say, what to wear, and how to greet people (without guessing)

Beginners often ask:

• Do I need to know Hebrew?

• What if I don't know the prayers?

• Can I attend if I'm not Jewish?

• What do I even say to someone during the holiday?

• Do I have to fast on Rosh Hashanah?

This guide answers all of it — plainly, warmly, and without assuming you already belong before you've even arrived.

A glossary of key terms, a simple walkthrough for your first Rosh Hashanah, and a one-page quick-reference guide are included at the back for easy review before the holiday.

You don't need to already understand Rosh Hashanah to belong at it. This book meets you where you are.
