[++] Subrahmanyan Chandresekhar (1910-1995) was a Sommerfeldian/Helmhotlzian/Thomas-Youngian figure in the history of science in that he moved through numerous fields and absolutely mastered them all. The end of his eight-pages in the Complete Dictionary of Scientific Biography Online sums it all up for him: when introducing secondary texts on Chandra explaining the different aspects of his work, the editor states that each would approach the "colossal scientific edifice Chandrasekhar left behind". Colossal indeed. (I don't recall having encountered the word "colossal" in the DSB before this.) Towards the end of his very long and hyperproductive career (with numerous books and over 380 papers published) Chandra was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1983 for "His theoretical studies of the physical awarded processes of importance to the structure and evolution of the stars.".
