Rough Rhymes of a Padre: The First World War Poetry of Woodbine Willie

Written in the trenches of the First World War by G. A. Studdert Kennedy — the army chaplain soldiers nicknamed "Woodbine Willie" for handing out cigarettes alongside comfort — this collection of dialect verse captures the raw voice of the ordinary Tommy facing mud, death, and doubt.

Through the broad working-class speech of soldiers in the line, Studdert Kennedy wrestles with the biggest questions of the war: Where is God amid the shelling? Does a loving Father really watch the slaughter? What happens to the souls of men who die doing their duty? Poems like "Well?", "The Sorrow of God," and "Judgment" strip away polite theology and ask what faith means when your mate has just been blown to pieces beside you — while lighter pieces like "The Secret" and "The Spirit" capture the dark humour and stubborn endurance that kept men going.

First published to huge popularity among the troops of the B.E.F., these poems remain one of the most honest and moving records of what soldiers actually believed, doubted, and hoped for in the trenches — a chaplain's tribute to "their comrade," written by one who shared their danger and never claimed easy answers.

A vital piece of First World War literature for readers of war poetry, military history, and the spiritual life of the trenches.
